Pause.

Sit in silence while taking a four deep breaths. Use the words below for a breath prayer or breath meditation on each of the inhales:

Inhale: I write to belong.

Exhale.

Inhale: I write to become.

Exhale.

Inhale: I write to behold.

Exhale.

Inhale: I write to bestow.

Exhale.

Repeat the full cycle if you like.

"Imagine writing to belong, become, behold, and bestow as four points along an immense bright spiral of light rays extending in all directions along the curving trajectories, each resplendent and brilliant…”

“Each point along the golden spiral of light serves as an invitation into this continuous cycle. You can enter any time through any posture of belonging, becoming, beholding, or bestowing, then dart and pulse along the spiral—upward or downward, inward or outward—as you find your way to whatever comes next.”

Practice.

Set a timer for 10 minutes and respond to the quotes above and the reflection prompts and questions below.

  1. Draw a picture of the spiral of light with the words “belong,” “become,” “behold,” and “bestow” along the curving paths.

  2. How have you inhabited belonging, becoming, beholding, and bestowing in your writing or other creative practices over the past few weeks?

  3. Take notes or journal about how you notice connections between your spiritual life and creative life in light of belonging, becoming, beholding, and bestowing.

  4. Which memories, desires, regrets, or hopes are stirring in your heart, mind, and soul right now?
