We Rediscover Who We Are (Again)
Daily Nourishment Read Time: 30 seconds
Pause/Prompt/Practice Time: 15 minutes
“By asking what we value, we rediscover who we are. By examining the things we most value, we illuminate the human urge to preserve the past and speak to the future.” - Jonathan Fein
Please Note: As I prepare for the Spiritual Direction for Writers book launch, I’ll be reposting recent Daily Nourishment offerings. You are a different version of yourself than you were when you first encountered the Pause, Prompt, and Practice below. So, all is well. Engage with this offering with the version of yourself that you are today. You got this.
Pause.
Take three deep breaths with a six-count inhale and a six-count exhale. Use the words below on each inhale for a breath prayer/breath meditation, if you like.
Inhale: Rediscover me
Exhale:
Inhale: Preserve the past
Exhale:
Inhale: Speak to the future
Exhale:
Prompt.
Set a timer for five minutes and respond to these questions. Take notes or make lists or write full sentences.
What things in your home mean the most to you? How do ordinary objects define who you are and what you value? How do objects help you preserve the past and speak to the future?
Practice.
Set a timer for 10 minutes then write about two objects in your home, one on display and one hidden. You can take notes, journal, or start a new poem, story, essay, or letter to a friend.
