Pause.
Sit in silence while taking a four deep breaths. Use the words below for a breath prayer or breath meditation on each of the inhales:
Inhale: My time is mine.
Exhale.
Inhale: My energy is mine.
Exhale.
Inhale: My time is mine.
Exhale.
Inhale: My energy is mine.
Exhale.
Repeat the full cycle if you like.
Prompt.
“If we abide by the rules someone else has created to determine what it means to be a writer—or a person—we reinforce the status quo. It’s important to assess why you do what you do. Do you have to do it the way everyone else does it? Is there a more creative way to do the thing you want to do (write more, rest more, have a different day job or weekend schedule so you can write more or rest more) instead of going with a flow that’s carrying you to a destination you’d rather not visit? Reclaiming your agency regarding your time and energy provides entryways to vaster and more nurturing landscapes from which to create and make your art.”

Practice.
Set a timer for 10 minutes and respond to the quotes above and the reflection prompts and questions below.
What would be different if you reclaimed your agency for how you use your time and energy? Even if you’re accustomed to this posture, what would be different if you moved deeper into it?
Why do you write? Which daily and weekly decisions support your writing and other creative expressions?
Which rules about the creative life have you absorbed? Which ones do you need to let go of because they aren’t serving you?
If you could plan a perfect day for writing and nourishing your creative soul, what would that look like? Create a schedule for each hour of the day.
