Daily Nourishment for April 27, 2024: It’s My Own Mystery I’m Looking At

Daily Nourishment Read Time: 40 seconds
Pause/Prompt/Practice Time: 13 minutes

“The real subject in poetry isn’t the voice. The real subject is silence. It’s like in architecture, where the medium is not really stone or metal, but space.”
- Li-Young Lee

Prompt.

Here’s more from Li-Young Lee:

“English is not my first language, though it is the language in which I write. I feel the real medium for me is silence, so I could be writing in any language. To inflect the inner silence, to give it body, that’s all we’re doing. You use the voice to make the silence present.”

Practice.

Set a timer for five minutes and sit in silence.

Then set a timer for seven minutes and take notes on your recent experiences of silence by responding to the quotes above or the questions below:

- What sorts of silence do you crave?
- What sorts of silence create discomfort?
-What or who has been too silent lately?
-What arises inside you when you’re practicing silence?
-What does your body feel like when you’re practicing silence?
-What are three metaphors that might help you explain and/or understand silence?
