Good morning, I was up super late last night watching my husbandโs alma mater (where he played basketball a really long time ago) almost beat Kansas in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Timโs best friend, Mitch, is the associate head coach for Samford, so we had more than one reason to care about that game. Of course, there was a terrible call near the end of the game that pretty much took away Samfordโs chances of pulling off an upset win over a team that couldnโt believe they were in that position. After the game, I texted the group chat with Tim, Mitch, and his wife, Amy, and told them Iโm proud of the Bulldogs and sent them my love. Itโs really all about the love, the friendship, and the relationships right? Even if they had won the game, the โMuch love to the Colesโ I sent in that text at around 12:30 in the morning would still matter more than the win. I decided to stay in Asheville for this entire week after bringing Brady back to school after his spring break, in part, because thereโs a party tonight for a former faculty member for my MFA program. Susanne and her husband recently moved to Asheville, and two of my MFA writer friends, Amy Peterson and Michael Dechane, are hosting the gathering to welcome Susanne and her husband to the city. They invited me to attend since Iโm in Asheville a good amount, and it worked out for me to be here. I couldโve returned to Birmingham on Tuesday or Wednesday, but I wanted to celebrate a good thing. I wanted to be with a few of my writer friends and mingle with interesting strangers who call Asheville home. While we celebrate tonight, another writer friend is navigating something very scary. Another is in the throes of parenting two little boys while working part time and writing a book with way-fewer-than-ideal hours of sleep each night. Another is navigating a separation and impending divorce. While I care about my writer friendsโ writing and books and poems and stories, what I care about most is them as people. I honor our friendships and value our relationships. I love them and want them to flourish as whole beings, regardless of how their writing is going. May you notice the goodness of love and friendship today, in whatever form it comes to you. And may you flourish as a whole being, regardless of how your writing is going. Thank you for being here.
