Pause.

Visio Divina

Look at the painting Young Woman Writing by Pierre Bonnard for three minutes.


Let your eyes rest on one detail. Don’t try to take in the whole painting.

While you look at the detail your eyes are drawn to, let your body be supported and held by the furniture on which you are sitting. Notice how your body, arms, and hands are positioned. Relax a bit, if you can. Let your breath lengthen and deepen. Breathe more slowly and deeply than you typically might.

Prompt.

Now, look at the whole painting for three more minutes. See the woman writing. The table on which she writes. The paper on which she writes.

What thoughts come to mind? What desires or memories are beckoned?

Respond to the image, your thoughts, desires, memories for five minutes.

Practice.

Notice invitations to do visio divina in the coming days with more art or something in nature that captures your attention.
