Interviewer: β€œWhat motivates you to write?”
Chaim Potok: β€œI have no idea. It’s the darkest of mysteries to me.”

Pause.

Today is the birthday of Chaim Potok. Best known as a novelist – his books include My Name is Asher Lev and The Chosen – Potok was also, avocationally, a visual artist. Ponder this Potok serigraph.

Prompt.

My Name is Asher Lev is, among other things, about what happens when a gifted Orthodox Jew enters (to use a phrase form one of the novel’s characters) β€œa religion called painting.”

In the novel, Asher Lev wants to evoke his mother’s suffering in paint. He does so, finally, by painting a crucifixion with his mother in the place of Jesus. Years after writing the novel, Potok said in an interview β€œI think most serious writers, certainly in the modern period, use their own lives or the lives of people close to them or lives they have heard about as the raw material for their creativity.”

Practice.

Brainstorm for four minutes in response to that quotation – what in your own life or the lives of people close to you or that you have heard about would you secretly like to use as the raw material for your creativity?  After brainstorming for four minutes, take up one gem from your brainstorms and write in response to it for six minutes.
