Sit still, listen to, and observe this live performance from Sigur Rós.

Prompt.

Watch the video again, this time paying attention to the way that the music impacts how you feel about the visuals (people in the crowd, the natural setting, the band performing). Does it change your perception?

Practice.

After you have watched this video a second time, take five minutes to write down the particulars that struck you:

—How did the music feel?

—What images are lingering in your mind?

—Did the music transform the way you looked at the things that you were watching?

—What connections were made between feeling, sound, and image?

Mary McCampbell

Dr. Mary McCampbell is an associate professor of humanities at Lee University. Her publications span the worlds of literature, film, and popular music, and this interdisciplinary focus is also present in her book, Imagining Our Neighbors as Ourselves: How Art Shapes Empathy (Fortress Press). She was the Summer 2014 Writer-in-Residence at L’Abri Fellowship in Greatham, England and a 2018 Scholar-in-Residence at Regent Theological College in Vancouver, Canada.
