Paying close attention to our senses helps
ground us in the present moment.

Pause.

Read the poems β€œFrom Blossoms” by Li-Young Lee and β€œPeachesβ€”Six in a Tin Bowl, Sarajevo” by Sandra Cisneros. Read slowly, breathing deeply as you go.

Prompt.

Set a timer for 10 minutes and write a haiku about your favorite fruit. The haiku is a Japanese poetic form that consists of three lines, with five syllables in the first and third lines and seven in the middle.

Practice.

The next time you eat a piece of fruit, pay attention to each one of your senses. How does the fruit smell? What does its shape, weight, and texture feel like in your hand? How does its scent and surface change when you peel or cut it? How many flavors can you identify when you take a bite?
