In one of my favorite passages from Episcopal priest Robert Capon’s Supper of the Lamb (titled after his recipe for feasting for four days on one single leg of lamb), he challenges readers to spend an hour β€œin the society of an onion,” slowly noticing its smell, it layers, its moisture, its color, what chopping it feels like.

Pause.

I invite you to spend at least seven minutes getting to know one familiar food item nearby. Ask questions, take it apart, touch, smell, appreciate it. Spend as much time as you can giving it your full attention. Please resist the urge to write about it. Be with it.

Prompt.

Take four minutes to write about what you noticed, and include as many details as possible.

Practice.

Maybe try this same process of slow attention the next time you eat a meal. What changes for you if you encounter something familiar with such intense focus and curiosity? How does this create an attitude of feasting?

Note: In this season of Easter (which lasts for 50 days, in my tradition), I like to think about feasting following the 40-day fast of Lent. Join me this week as we think about feasting and writing.
