White Evangelicalism Broke Me Almost 20 Years Ago

white American evangelicalism broke me almost 20 years ago when spiritual abuse and trauma triggered my first bipolar 1 manic episode and landed me in an inpatient psychiatric ward

but making and engaging with art has saved me again and again

God has always met me in artful encounters and will continue to do so

the painting or film or music doesn’t have to be spiritual or religious for me to have a spiritual or religious experience but sometimes it is

I don’t put myself in the way of art frivolously

for me, art is life and flourishing and survival even when the evils of this world want to break you
